Water way to get people swimming
Wirral
is on the look out for a friendly team of Swim Buddies to help
get more residents over the age of 50 swimming on a regular
basis.
The appeal
is part of the Everyday Swim project, a national initiative
which aims to find new ways of making all pool activity more
accessible and popular. Wirral is one of eight areas taking part
in the project, with the focus here being on the over 50s.
Everyday
Swim coordinator for Wirral, Fiona Pantrich, says that, for a
limited commitment, people who act as buddies can have a
long-lasting impact on the lives of other residents.
She says:
“The role of buddy is to be a friendly face at reception, to
welcome people who might not have been to the centre before or
for a long time then to show them the ropes, where to go to get
changed, how to use the lockers and the way to the pool.
“This
personal touch is invaluable and can be the difference between
people coming just once or coming back time and again.”
Volunteer
buddies will be given training, mainly to give them confidence,
in September conducted by Fiona in association with Age Concern.
Also from September there will be dedicated daytime 50+ sessions
at all of Wirral’s council-run pools and it is hoped that
buddies will be there to help out at some of these public
sessions.
If you feel
you could spare an hour or so in the mornings during the week to
assist people at your local pool as a Swim Buddy, contact Fiona
Pantrich on 0781 800 6716 to sign up.
